Stem cells are potentially the ultimate source of transplantable cells for many different tissues. A major obstacle in the clinical use of stem cells is their possible immunogenicity. Our technology’s innovative approach is to entrap the cells in capsules made of biocompatible polymers. This approach was specifically designed to take advantage of the immortality of these cells, while avoiding any possible immune response or the formation of teratomas. These capsules protect the cells from the immune system and act as a mini bioreactor, allowing them to secrete the engineered factor or natural therapeutic near sites of interest.
