The present invention describes targeted and rapid means for reversible mechanical manipulation of individual cells (e.g., activation of excitable cells such as neurons) using the combined, synergistic action of light and ultrasound. This method provides modulation of the individual cell from distance in a selective, reversible, and rapid way and may be used in various applications as neuron stimulation for inner ear prosthesis, retinal prosthesis, implanted pacemaker and more.
